September 18, 1956. His formal education includes a BS in Chemistry from the University
of Seville, Spain (1978); an MS in Organic Chemistry from the University of Seville (1979),
and a PhD in Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) from the University of Cadiz (1984).
Dr. Macías has been Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry in Louisiana
State University, Baton Rouge during 1987,89,91,93,95 where he establish a strong collaboration
program with Professor Nikolaus H. Fischer. Presently he is Associate Professor of
Organic Chemistry at the University of Cadiz, Spain since 1987. His primary responsibilities
are research (basic and applied) on Allelopathy since the Organic Chemistry point of view
and teaching in the areas of Organic Chemistry, Ecological Organic Chemistry and other related
subjects.
His research interest are related with different aspects of Allelopathic Studies including
higher plants and microorganisms and involves studies on natural and modified ecosystems and
developing of new methodologies for allelopathic studies including mode of actions.
He headed  the "Cadiz Allelopathy Group" pioneer in Spain and Europe in Allelopathic Studies
since the Organic Chemistry viewpoint, with a multidisciplinary structure. During this period,
his group has  isolated, characterized and tested the bioactivity of more than 300 allelochemicals,
within others two novel families of bioactive sesquiterpenes, Heliannanes and Heliespiranes.
"If we know the way that plants made possible their inter and intra specific relationship
within an specific ecosystem, we can mimic certain processes and think in natural applications
as natural herbicides, natural insecticides, etc."
Dr. Macías has directed (as major advisor) 25 MS and PhD students.
His publications exceed 80, with book chapters. He has presented over 30 invited lectures

for the best paper of the year 1993 in Journal of Chemical Ecology.
Paper: J. D. Weidenhamer, F.A. Macías, N. H. Fischer and G. B. Williamson,"Just, How Insoluble
Are Monoterpenes?" J. Chem. Ecol.,  19, 1799-1807, 1993. Recently, he has received the 1999
Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Award from Phytochemical Society of Europe. He is President-elect of the
International Allelopathy Society since 1996 and was Vice-President for Europe (1994-96) and the
